The SNIPER Strategy

When dealing with the Sniper at a meeting, you must call attention to this difficult behavior. You want to do so in a calm and professional manner, and avoid becoming a Sniper or Tank yourself. This creates a contrast between the Sniper's inappropriate behavior and your own professional behavior. It also makes it very difficult for others in the room to ally themselves with the Sniper.

We suggest two ways of calling attention to the Sniper.

1. Stop, look, backtrack, and then probe for the grievance
or
2. Use the Relevancy Challenge

There is tremendous power in having the ability to interrupt yourself in mid word or sentence, because it grab's everyone's attention. Then you slowly turn to the sniper, while breathing deeply to calm yourself. You don't have to think fast because the Sniper has already told you what to say. Just backtrack the Sniper's comment and ask,"What are you really trying to say?" The Sniper might back off, in which case you have won the round and you can resume what you were doing. The Sniper might snipe again, in which case you just backtrack the snipe and ask for the grievance again. This usually won't go more than a couple of rounds before the Sniper tells you what is going on or backs off. Or the Sniper could become a Tank and attack you right out in the open. If that happens, it is a good thing in that youll find out what is going on. Remember, when a Sniper becomes a Tank, use the Tank strategy.

Your second option is the relevancy challenge. Again you stop yourself in mid word or sentence. Then addressing the group you state the purpose of the meeting and align yourself with that purpose. Then turn to the sniper and ask them how their comment is relevant to that purpose. It is a real tough trap for them to get out of because it exposes how of purpose their behavior is.
